Formen - Dialektik

2024 | ES-017 | Edition of 37

Formen’s second album Dialektik examines contemporary ambivalence through a strict sound-design logic. It is built from opposing materials—tone and noise, function and malfunction, analog and digital—organized into rhythmic and textural structures. The record moves between tension and release, reduction and density, allowing contrast and progression to shape its form.

All sound sources are analog and treated through mixing and modulation techniques; digital artifacts serve as structural elements, introducing controlled errors and discontinuities. Performances were played and mixed live on the console, privileging material interaction over post-production.

A limited dubplate series foregrounds the record as object; the medium is treated as part of the work. A lathe-cut run of 37 dubplates was produced by the artist. Each cover consists of a unique collage of original mechanical engineering drawings dated between 1916 and 1948, sourced from the archives of the technical universities of Neuchâtel and La Chaux-de-Fonds.

Mastering was carried out by Stephan Mathieu at Schwebung Mastering. Dubplate masters were adapted to the medium’s physical properties by Formen.
