Formen - Looping Lathe Cut Errors
2024 | ES-013 | Soundinstallation
Cutting records is both a technical and infrastructural challenge. Formen discovered this firsthand when he began working in this craft in 2023. Frequency, amplitude, phase, dynamics, stereo information, electrostatics, room humidity, surface temperature, cutting depth, groove spacing, pitch, choice of material - these factors (and more) all play a role in achieving a clean lathe cut. It is no surprise, then, that the production of Formen's first lathe cut series involved extensive trial and error. In producing the 19 Intermodulation cuts, a total of 67 pieces were discarded as waste.
In the spirit of embracing the aesthetics of error, Formen transformed these 67 discarded pieces into a sound installation. Two 'defective' - often skipping - records were chosen at random and played simultaneously. By adjusting equalizers, playback speed, and a simple high-pass/low-pass filter, the installation created patterns that were repetitive yet constantly evolving.
Therefore, Looping Lathe Cut Errors reflects on the coexistence of art and waste, music and noise, intention and error - celebrating the beauty found in imperfection.
