HARZ - HARZ

2022 | ES-006 | Edition of 100 (cassette) resp. 10 (serigraphy)

In his debut album, HARZ dedicates himself to the art of microsampling. Through the clever and innovative use of his vintage 12-bit, 4kHz sampler, a 14-channel mixing console, and self-entangled effect loops, HARZ creates an homage to the soundscape of early Clicks 'n' Cuts and Glitch. The album's abstract downtempo grooves stand out for their hypnotic rhythms, which, combined with glitchy loops and seesawing vinyl noise, evoke a sensation of floating. As usual, each track is performed live without overdubs or subsequent editing.

The album's covers and posters were created in collaboration with Formen. In parallel to HARZ's music, which uncovers the hidden details of tone and noise through microsampling, the cover features a macro shot of a halftone print, revealing the hidden textures of images.

The mastering was also handled by Formen. With the exception of some minor digital adjustments, the album was primarily mastered using analog compressors, tube EQs, and Formen's trusty reel-to-reel machine. This approach allowed for a strong emphasis on the warm texture inherent in HARZ's music.

The album has been transferred to C-44 cassettes by our friends at Sinus Dub. This time, we've chosen Type II chrome tapes, which are slightly more expensive than the usual Type I cassettes but offer a higher dynamic range and broader frequency spectrum, resulting in superior sound quality.

This release is accompanied by a handmade serigraphy, designed and printed in collaboration with Formen. The prints are on DIN A3 (11"x17") heavy-stock paper and are hand-numbered. Strictly limited to 10 pieces per color, the prints may vary as each one is handmade.
